The whole family gathers together at Combe Endellion for probate after Alexander's death: Stephen inherits only the Dower House. The estate and the large estates will go to Charles. Stephens hateful challenge to contest the inheritance law, terrified the whole family.
On quieter, but more essential way, Charlotte is shocked personally: She's pregnant. Charlotte informed the father, the conductor Simon Maxwell, of Charlotte because of a New York job offer had left three months ago. Abby is a little excited when Simon shows up unexpectedly in Endellion, because she is afraid of losing her mother a second time, this time in Charlotte's great love.
